Plastic Moulding
Plastic moulding is an industrial process used to make plastic parts for commercial, industrial, and consumer uses. The first plastic moulding machines were created during the second half of the 19th century. These early machines were used to make plastic buttons, combs, and other simple, everyday items.
Today, plastic moulding is one the most common methods of making plastic articles, components, and housings. Its advantage is that delivers large amounts of identical products at a high quality in a short time frame. The process is used by almost every industry there is, from aviation to computers to the automotive industry.
Plastic Moulding: Making the Mould
Along with specialised machines, plastic moulding requires a custom-made mould. The mould determines the shape of the end project and therefore requires careful planning, designing, and building.
Getting a mould just right can be a challenge. Most moulds require further optimisation after arriving from the manufacturer to the plastic moulding factory. Optimising a mould can be a tricky and time-consuming process and should be handled by experts.
Plastic Moulding Processes
There are several types of plastic moulding each utilising a slightly different method and process. The most common is plastic injection moulding, which takes plastic granules, heats them into a molten form, and then uses a reciprocating screw to drive the plastic into a mould where it is cooled.
From the basic injection moulding setup, further processes are derived. One such process is structural foam moulding, which takes the same basic injection moulding process but adds gas or a blowing agent that causes the plastic to foam. Structural foam products have the advantage of being lightweight and, due to the more controlled nature of the process, can be larger than standard injection moulded pieces.
Another additional process derived from injection moulding is insert moulding. This is where an insert is placed on the mould either during or after the moulding process takes place. The insert can be added using robotics or by an operator, depending on the sophistication of the setup.
